The General Consensus is WRONG!
90% of Americans don’t have a twitter account
And of the 10% that do, only 20% of them actually post content on twitter
This means an overwhelming minority of people are responsible for the majority of content on that platform.
Thing is, it’s probably the same on ALL social media platforms (this one included).
I recall when I worked as a technical support agent in the call centre of a software company After a few months I had the impression that this software was utter crap & everyone I spoke to was not happy with it & had issues. Of course they did! They wouldn’t call support to chit chat (actually some older callers loved to chit chat to us).
One revealing piece of data showed me that only 20% of the customer base were responsible for over 90% of the calls to support, and of that 20%, 10% were repeat callers. This meant that 80%, the overwhelming majority hardly ever contacted. The assumption is that they were happy with the software & had no issues.
So my perspective changed, from ‘the software is shit’ to ’it’s not as shit as I thought’ & my interactions went from starting off by looking at software bugs, to starting off by understanding the person & their thought process in order to figure out where they got themselves confused.
My perspective had been widened & as such the barometer for what I considered the zeitgeist was put under scrutiny & doubt.
Now, I’m not saying that this is good or bad, but I am calling out that most of what you see online is quite literally the ‘General Consensus of a vocal minority’ with the majority opting not to voice their opinion. Which I think is GOOD, because in this day of ‘everyone having an opinion on everything, no matter how ill informed they are’ it’s comforting to know that the overwhelming majority are keeping theirs to themselves.
Please feel free to comment and tell me what you don’t think.
