We’re Doing AI Wrong

Catchy title for a post isn’t it? But it’s true.  Whilst there may be some uses being investigated that miraculously allow paralysed folks to be able to walk & speak using AI in an implant form as a ‘digital bridge’ between the brain and the spinal column, you don’t hear too much about other, arguably more impactful to society, kinds of use cases for AI.

It’s no secret that AI has come for our creativity. It has come for the things that we do (or did) which were motivated by passion. Artists, writers, musicians, designers. These folk don’t pursue a life of being rejected & living off crumbs because that’s what they like. They have a passion to exercise their creativity, and that’s what they pursued, and in general creatives are accepting less and less pay as they get more and more devalued…

…and that’s what we’re pointing AI at to replace??

Here’s a small list of the top 10 most dangerous jobs:

  1. Fishing & Hunting (Fatal injury rate: 132.1 per 100,000 workers)

  2. Logging Workers (Fatal injury rate: 91.7 per 100,000 workers)

  3. Roofers (Fatal injury rate: 43.3 per 100,000 workers)

  4. Construction Workers (Fatal injury rate: 43.3 per 100,000 workers)

  5. Aircraft Pilots & Flight Engineers (Fatal injury rate: 34.3 per 100,000 workers)

  6. Refuse Waste & Recyclable Material Collectors (Fatal injury rate: 33.1 per 100,000 workers)

  7. Structural Iron & Steel Workers (Fatal injury rate: 32.5 per 100,000 workers)

  8. Delivery & Truck Drivers (Fatal injury rate: 25.8 per 100,000 workers)

  9. Underground Mining Machine Operators (Fatal injury rate: 21.6 per 100,000 workers)

  10. Farmers & Agricultural Workers (Fatal injury rate: 20.9 per 100,000 workers)

I’m sure if you dig enough you can find some AI enhancements or MVP products out there for ‘some’ of these jobs, but it just does NOT seem to be where the focus of AI seems to be at the moment.

My question is: Why?

Why wouldn’t there be a more concerted effort for AI to reduce the need for people to do the world’s most dangerous jobs?

Are these people not important enough to save?

Are these jobs not important?

Is it not lucrative enough?

Sincerely yours,

Curious George Raffi
